Class O – Office to Residential guidance 2020

The Government first introduced Class O in 2013 in England (originally Class J), and has proved popular as a tool for developers to achieve change of use of office buildings B1(a) as defined by the Use Class Order) to residential use. In terms of the Legislation, the General Permitted Development Order (2015) (“GPDO”) provides consent to certain development, in some instances this is subject to prior approval by the Local Planning Authority.

This document provides guidance on what to look out for, and the process in which change of use is secured via the Prior Approval method.
