About the Project

We worked with the client and Historic Building Studio to bring forward a heritage-led scheme that brought back into life a key part of Brixton Hill.

The existing site was a part historic structure which was identified as a positive contributor to the Conservation Area. Historic Building Studio led a contextual design that resolved an in-fill addition integrating with the existing building and optimising the site.

To successfully bring both the new addition with the existing historic building, a co-living model was adopted which spanned both the existing and new addition to create double rooms with shared facilities. At the forefront of the client’s vision was to create a place to live, balancing private and communal spaces. The ground floor is a Class E flexible use that was secured as part of the permission.

We supported the scheme from pre-application to the planning application stage including the S106 agreement.  Detailed evidence to demonstrate that the proposed co-living use was appropriate in this location and would support the wider Brixton area.

Project Highlights

  • Heritage-led scheme that optimised the use of the asset and delivered an innovative residential product.
  • Evidence-led planning justification for the proposed use which was supported by the Council.
  • Mixed-use scheme with flexible ground floor reinvigorating this part of Brixton Hill and making a positive contribution to the townscape.
